The school works within the requirements of the National Curriculum, which identifies specific areas of study for each Key Stage. We cover a broad and balanced curriculum through a creative curriculum topic based approach, which was designed by our teachers to meet the changing needs of our cohorts of pupils at Stocks Lane Primary School.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum
The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework explains what your child will be learning to support their healthy development. They will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of learning and development. Children will develop the three ‘Prime Areas’ first. These include:

There are four ‘Specific Areas’ of learning, through which the Prime areas are strengthened and applied:

Alongside these key areas of learning we also use the children’s needs and interests to plan challenging and enjoyable activities and experiences.
In Reception, we spend the majority of our time split between the inside classroom, the covered outdoor area and the outside area.
The classroom is split into different areas of learning. There are three role play areas - the home corner and another two role play spaces linked to our topics which has, in the past, included a jungle, a winter wonderland, a pirate ship, a hospital, a superhero HQ, a mission control centre and a seaside.
In addition, the other learning areas include water, sand, painting and modelling as well as construction, mark making, maths , ICT, reading, music and science.
The outside space also integrates many of the above areas, as well as providing additional physical provision, which includes a tyre area and access to many of our large toys.
The learning in Reception is through play. Children are encouraged to use all areas of provision. Language is encouraged in all areas, as is the development of number, reading and writing.
Throughout the year we complete Learning Journeys on all of the children. These are records about the pupils and their particular interests, including photographs. These Learning Journeys will be shared with you at the end of the school year and will inform you of your child’s progress and whether they have met or are continuing to work towards their Early Learning Goals (ELG’s). There are 17 ELG’s that your child is expected to achieve by the end of their year in Reception.
Reading
At Stocks Lane Primary School we value reading and endeavour to teach it through phonics, guided reading sessions and individual reading. Pupils are encouraged to read at home and their reading record provides a place for parents to communicate with school and vice versa. We have a number of volunteers who come into school to read with our children and our older children are Reading Buddies to the younger children.
